Protecting Our Environment
BCHLC Revisits Sitio Katorse (LY2017-2018)
For Lions Worldwide Week of Service to Protect Our Planet, Baguio City Host Lions Club, through Sheree Nolasco of Causa Nostra Biodiversity Group and with the cooperation of Bag-iw Indigenous People's Group, revisited Sitio Katorse (Sitio 14) of Mount Santo Tomas where, in LY2016-2017, BCHLC planted some pine and fruit-bearing seedlings and turned over more to the residents of Sitio 14 for their care.
Pine seedlings survived, as did some others. Some calliandra were devoured by goats and bugnay (wild berries) did not survive the colder climate. But overall, the survival rate of the 200 seedlings planted was higher than the usual 10% survival rate when left alone in the forest reserve. After the site visitation, the club descended the mountain to Poblacion, Tuba, Benguet in Mount Cabuyao, where locals were gathered, and distributed recycled eyeglass frames (from our twin club East Kauai Lions Club and the rest of District 50 Hawaii), multivitamins and medicines (from our twin club Maharlika Lions Club of Sacramento, California), used clothes (from some club members and from Lion Mel Aoki of Manoa Waioli Lions Club of District 50 Hawaii) and LED emergency lights (courtesy of PDG Roger Dy). |
Tree Planting at Buyog Watershed (LY2017-2018)
Baguio City Host Lions Club trekked the slippery slopes of Buyog Watershed and Forest Reserve in Quirino Hill, Baguio City to plant 200 trees. This is part of District 301-C Baguio Region's simultaneous tree planting activities at three different locations in the City. Other clubs planted trees at Camp 8 and at Busol Watershed. This project was initiated last year by Region Chair Joanne Balderas. A memorandum of agreement was signed between Lions Clubs of Baguio and the Baguio Water District for the former to adopt 1,000 square meters of watershed areas for three years.
Tree Planting - Sitio Katorse, Mt. Santo Tomas (LY2016-2017)
Baguio City Host Lions officers coordinated with Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Causa Nostra Biodiversity Group for the prearranged request of the community of Sito Katorse, Mt. Santo Tomas in Tuba, Benguet, for fruit-bearing tree saplings from the newly-introduced back yard agro-forest initiatives for the government’s rehabilitation and transition program.
The Bag-iw Indigenous Peoples groups were one of the very few people who volunteered to transition vegetable gardens to agro-forestry in their desire to preserve a forest cover fast being lost to tourism, illegal logging and expansion of vegetable gardens.
On a rainy windy day of August 1, 2016, protected with rain gears and umbrellas, the Lions Club members showed up in Sitio Katorse amongst community volunteers who ushered them to their mountainous backyards to plant the fruit trees that stamped and signaled the first year of accepting the true essence of forest rehabilitation.
BCHLC Returns to Buyog Watershed (LY2016-2017)
BCHLC members trekked to Buyog Watershed Forest Reserve in Baguio City to plant more trees in line with the local government’s efforts to reforest our mountain ranges. The reforestation at Buyog is part of a large-scale project involving all Baguio City Lions Clubs to adopt 1,000 square meters of Baguio watersheds for a period of 3 years. This is in partnership with the Baguio Water District.
Baguio City Host Lions Club first planted hundreds of trees in Buyog some fifteen years ago, and the good news is that many of the seedlings have survived and grown as healthy trees. Club members have returned recently to revisit the newly-planted seedlings, cleaned out the weeds.
